THOUSANDS of plastic confectionary tubs have been saved from landfill thanks to a local Tub2Pub campaign.
From January 1 and February 16, the Greene King pub chain ran their 2025 Tub2Pub campaign. Since it was launched five years ago, the campaign has so far saved 26,253kg of plastic going into landfill, that's approximately 230,000 tubs, raising £23,908 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Last year alone Greene King collected over 150,000 plastic confectionery and biscuit tubs raising £12,600 which shows how quickly it is growing in popularity as more people hear about it.
Millions of plastic confectionery tubs are sold in the UK each year but these plastics are hard to recycle and many people don’t realise they unfortunately can’t put the tubs in with household recycling. This is a great initiative to turn them into something positive after use rather than ending up in landfill. At the end of the campaign, all the tubs are taken to a UK plastic reprocessing centre where they are shredded, before being sold on to plastic manufacturers to use to make recycled plastic products. All the money raised from the sale is given directly to Macmillan Cancer Support.
Marhamchurch resident Vanessa Dennis got on board for the first time last year after a friend read about the scheme. As Vanessa is a keen charity fundraiser, mostly for Marie Curie and Macmillan, she keenly took on the challenge and collected 249 tubs. After finding it rather addictive, she wanted to beat that figure and with the help of some friends, has collected over 1,100 tubs this year!
Friend, Helen Hicks had joined forces with Vanessa, collecting tubs from neighbours on the Stourscombe estate in Launceston.
Speaking to the Post, Vanessa said: “A huge thank you must also go to Paula and her colleagues for all their help taking in over 350 tubs at Penbode Pet Vets in Stratton. Paula has been another keen collector since she set up a collection point at the vets for me last year! Also thanks to Wendy Soper who set up a collection point at North Petherwin this year and everyone else involved, those who collected at their workplaces, social groups etc. or just kindly dropped off their individual tubs, they just kept on coming and the total just goes to show that every little helps!
“Although unfortunately some tubs were not dropped off in time, Helen and I headed off with a whopping 1,096 tubs to The Cedars Inn at Barnstaple, part of the Greene King chain. It was certainly fun trying to get all the tubs in Helen's husband's van and with the hope of collecting even more tubs in 2026, they are definitely going to need a bigger vehicle next time! I had phoned ahead to warn the pub how many they were bringing but the staff still seemed quite amused at the never ending piles of tubs being brought in.”
