This month’s Launceston Town Council meeting marked the final full meeting before Launceston welcomes a new Mayor.

From May 11, Cllr Helen Bailey will step into the role of Mayor of Launceston, taking over from Cllr Leighton Penhale who has been much loved and appreciated by residents during his time as Mayor.

Speaking to the Post about her new role, Cllr Bailey said: “I would like to thank Leighton for all his support during my time as his deputy. We have worked well together, shared challenges and laughter.

“There have been many projects the Council have undertaken during the last few years and Covid slowed a lot of things and put a lot of obstacles in the way for us as well residents.

“In the coming year I would like to see many of the plans completed after all the hard work it has taken to get the funding and skills in place, including the Museum, Skate Park, Safer Greener Streets and the Library. None of these are small projects and our staff are working tirelessly to see things move as quickly as they can.

“My choice of Mayor’s Charity are Launceston Leisure Centre and Man Down the mental health support group for men in Launceston who meet at the Orchard Centre.”
