A BENCH was placed in Launceston’s Coronation Park recently in honour of former trustee of the park, Tony Sandercock.

Family members oversaw the placement of the bench and were joined by town councillors and county councillors.

Some emotional words were said by Tony’s son, Peter Sandercock, when the bench was placed. After the placement, he said: “It was an honour to say a few emotional words on behalf of the family on Wednesday evening in Coronation Park.

“A special thank you must go to Connor Burtonwood (grandson of Tony) who did the concrete base and Tom Sandercock (grandson of Tony) for securing the bench.”

Also in attendance was Launceston’s mayor, David Gordon, who is also the Coronation Park Trust chairman. He said: “Tony was not only a respected town councillor, he was also a passionate and dedicated trustee of Coronation Park for many years.

“It was Tony and the late Eric Chapman that got me involved in the park, and it was their drive and enthusiasm that has helped make the park what it is today. Tony was always one of the first to offer his help for the annual firework display, and was very proud to serve his community in any way.”

According to Dave, the bench was a completely deserved gesture in recognition of Tony.

He added: “The trustees are delighted to install the bench in Tony’s memory, it is no more than he deserves and we hope that his wife Jean and family feel that we have adequately marked his contribution to Coronation Park.”
