Pickets were outside St Mary’s Hospital, Launceston, for most of the day on Wednesday in support of the TUC Day of Action on behalf of health service workers. At Bude a demonstration — estimated to have attracted 44 supporters —marched from The Triangle to Stratton Hospital where a letter of support for hospital workers and NHS employees was presented to the senior nursing officer.

Best selling single ever, Elton John’s ‘Candle In The Wind’ has been running low of stock in Launceston music shops, the week after it had been released. Jacob Sheppard, shop assistant at ‘Rhythm and Rhyme’ in Launceston was seen selling the last copy.

When Mr W A Webber, of Chapple, Launceston, was picking dahlias from the same plant he found one with two heads on one stem and another dahlia was three-quarters orange with one quarter bright mauve.

Playing at the house at their home, Milltown House, Yeolmbridge, schoolboys Vivian and Nigel Heard found a mushroom, which must surely be the largest of its species ever recorded. Weighing several pounds, the mushroom was 14 inches in diameter and 3ft 8ins in circumference. The stalk was as thick as a woman’s wrist.

The institution and induction of Rev Robert Hooker Rowden, as vicar of Hatherleigh was witnessed by a large congregation at the parish church on Tuesday.

Prisoners of war: Pte C Dimmick, 4 Greenbank Terrace, and Pte R G Mutton, 4 Peartree row, two Callington schoolfriends who were previously reported missing.
For masquerading in uniform as an officer at a dance in Launceston Town Hall, a London sheet metal worker was fined £10 by the local magistrates on Monday. His answers to the questions of genuine officers present gave him away.

Mr A M Williams, of Werrington Park, Launceston, who fought North Cornwall for the unionists at the recent by-election and who was Member for five years, has resigned his candidacy.
Because of lack of enthusiasm and because expenses are high, Bude’s winter carnival is not to be held this year. Instead, there may be the innovation of a summer carnival next August.

The Sanitary Committee of Launceston Town Council on Monday were told to get a move on by the Borough Medical officer of Haleth, Dr A Budd. He described the present method of scavenging and refuse collection as obsolete and recommended the more expeditious system of motorconveyance. He also called attention to the housing conditions. In Launceston, he said, there were about 50 houses unfit for human habitation.
