A MAN from Bude has walked the length of the country to raise money for one of the town’s popular beachside facilities.

Volunteer at Bude Sea Pool, John Dixon has completed an incredible 1,247 mile trek from John O'Groats to Land's End to raise money for the facility.

Undertaking this monumental challenge, John began his journey on May 9 and triumphantly reached Land's End on July 15, having walked and camped through all varieties of weather.

John, who has previously walked the South West Coast Path, has never taken on a challenge of this magnitude. Throughout his journey, he faced varying conditions, from the blazing sunshine to torrential rain, and traversed some of the UK's most breathtaking landscapes.

One of the toughest moments may have been reaching his home in Cornwall, only to leave again to face High Cliff, the tallest cliff in the county. His commitment to the cause remained steadfast, as he pushed forward mile after mile, driven by the support of friends, family, and other walkers he met along the way.

The Bude Sea Pool, a partially man-made tidal swimming pool nestled in the rocks at Summerleaze Beach, has been a vital part of the community since its opening in 1930. It receives no regular town council, Cornwall Council or central government funding and therefore relies heavily on volunteers and donations to maintain its operations and provide a safe and enjoyable space for both locals and visitors.

A spokesperson from Friends of Bude Sea Pool, the group responsible for the seaside facility, said: “John's fundraising efforts are a testament to his love for the Bude Sea Pool and his community spirit. The funds raised from his walk will go directly towards the maintenance and preservation of the pool, ensuring it remains a treasured asset for future generations.

“If you would like to donate to Bude Sea Pool to celebrate John’s achievement then please head to Donate – FoBSP – Friends of Bude Sea Pool and choose ‘John’s Nationwide Walk’ as the appeal.”
