THE traditional first show of the summer season has been cancelled at a week's notice in a row over health and safety regulations.
Llanbister Show was due to take place on the Whitsun Bank Holiday Monday, May 25 in the village north of Llandrindod Wells but organisers cancelled the event after Powys County Council objected to the use of the show field.
It said the event, which also includes children's sports and craft and cookery competitions, couldn't take place as the show field hasn't been cleared of animals for three weeks before the show.
The council says it is the responsibility of show organisers to ensure events comply with all relevant national legislation.
Claire Carter, the show's horse and pony steward and a member of the committee, blasted the council. She said: "This has come like a bolt out of the blue and we've been putting in work since January to put the show on."
Despite the cancellation of Monday's show a number of events will still take place at various locations around the Llanbister area on Sunday, May 24.
Those include a car treasure hunt, a fun horse ride and and a clay pigeon shoot.
