A CHARITY walk consisting of 120 miles crossing both Dartmoor and Exmoor is to be undertaken for charity by a young girl suffering from cerebral palsy.

Bethany Sargent, 11, has suffered from the condition since birth and undergone several major operations in that time.

Bethany, who lives in Lifton, said: "After several operations and a lot of physiotherapy, I'm lucky enough to be able to keep quite active.

"After a major operation I spent a few months in a wheelchair, which lowered my self esteem and knocked my confidence a lot, but it made me think that there are always people worse off than me and at least I could get out of the wheelchair once I was well enough.

"I have regained my confidence and all is well but my experience has made me think of others less fortunate, so I am setting myself a challenge to walk the Two Moors Way and raise as much money for other people with cerebral palsy as I can."

Bethany will also be joined by her two sisters, dad and grandad, family dog Marley, and others are welcome to participate for as much of the walk as they like.

The event will commence on July 24, and starts at Wembury, near Plymouth, heading towards Ivybridge and along the Two Moors Way across Dartmoor and Exmoor before reaching the finish at Lynmouth in Somerset.

The trek will raise funds for a charity called C P Sport, which helps adults and children suffering from cerebral palsy and other brain injuries to take part in sporting activities they otherwise could not. Bethany's dad, Chris Sargent, has expressed his thanks to everyone who has donated or contributed in any way to the event.

He added: "We are camping along the way so we are hoping the weather will be kind to us! If anybody would like to join us for the odd day or two, then feel free to contact us."

In addition to the walk, the family will be holding a Wine and Wisdom quiz night at the Arundell Arms in Lifton on April 24. The evening will also feature a grand raffle and charity auction with the proceeds again going to C P Sport. To book a place for the evening please call Chris on 07921 589175.
