Following the recent announcement that West Devon residents will require photographic ID to vote in the upcoming election, Simon Borrington of Bideford supplied the following letter:
"My concern with these new rules is that they have not been promoted sufficiently and that not enough people are as aware of them as they should be.
"There seem to be a number of concerns as to their legitimacy, and that they are an attempt to silence the democratic voice of a part of our population who are uncomfortable with the current political status quo.
"If this is the case, and it is amongst some of the worries that have been expressed by such organisations as the Electoral Reform Society, this move might be seen to constitute a direct attack on the democratic rights of UK citizens.
"I am personally of the opinion that changes such as these should be subjected to full public scrutiny, and not pushed in through appears to be an underhand way."
