A NEW sub-postmistress has been appointed at the Launceston Post Office. The positive news comes after a long time of being in doubt and limbo of the future of one of the town's most recognised businesses.
A spokesperson for the Post Office said: "Post Office Ltd has been working to find a sub-postmaster to take over the running of Launceston Post Office branch, which is currently operated by a temporary sub-postmaster. We are pleased to confirm that a new sub-postmaster has now been appointed and the transfer should be completed by mid July."
Previous suggestions of moving the Post Office to an alternative premises in the town were mooted and opoosed by many.
After a lengthy process of interviews of various applicants, the Post Office made the final decision and revealed the news, on Friday (May 30), that local business woman, Julie Allen, will be the new sub-postmistress of the premises with the target take over date on July 15.
Julie and her husband also own Pat's Greeting Cards and Pat's Party Pieces in Launceston, Julie explained that this will always continue and remain where it is: "Pat's' won't change, hopefully they will complement each other."
Around eight years ago Julie and Norman ran two village Post Offices previous to this one, St Mellion and Upton Cross. Julie said: "This has given us a sort of head start and we have had experience with the Post Office computer system."
When asked what plans they have for the future of the Post Office, Julie explained that they are planning to recruit more staff, re-decorate, restock and "spruce up" the inside and outside of the premises. The retail counter, which is currently only staffed part-time, will be staffed full-time and will sell books of stamps and it is hoped the situation of disabled access will be reviewed.
Julie was pleased that she had received a positive response from people and that she was looking forward to it.
Launceston Mayor Paul O'Brien expressed his delight: "I am absolutely delighted with the news, we have being doing as much as we can for the Post Office and Cllr Brian Keighley has done a great deal to achieve this result and is a just reward for all of the hard work on behalf of the entire town.
"It is a brilliant result to have someone to take over the Post Office who has got the best interests of the town at heart."
Cllr Brian Keighley commented of the news: "I am delighted it has all been sorted after a long battle with twists and turns in it and I am delighted the Post Office is staying where it is. I wish them all the best."
