The Launceston Leisure Centre team have been reflecting on the success of their new community-run facility.
It has been nearly two weeks since Launceston Leisure Centre reopened its doors to the public. With reports of queues building before the grand opening, it’s safe to say the local community were excited to have their leisure centre back.
The Post spoke to Jon Grainger, managing director of the centre, to find out more about the recent opening.
He said the first two weeks have been more than a little busy, describing the opening weeks as “hectic!”
The pace of community uptake has impressed everyone.
Jon explained: “We signed up over 100 new members in the first two days, it was full steam ahead and good fun!”
It has been a lot of hard work but Jon said it’s great to have the doors open again.
Jon continued: “We are very aware that things are not perfect at the moment, but we are working towards increasing our opening hours, starting junior swimming lessons and introducing a new class timetable.”
Jon says that there are other plans to improve the centre’s services, saying: “Opening times to be extended and the re-introduction of swimming lessons and fitness classes are our priority.”
However, responses to the reopening have been incredibly positive says Jon.
“So positive! We never imagined that we would get so much support from the local community. A massive thank you must go to all the local volunteers who have helped us with various jobs during this period.”
Adam Paynter, Cornwall councillor for Launceston North and North Petherwin, has been very active and supportive in the centre’s reopening.
Speaking to the Post, he said: “The support from the local community has been fantastic. This week has seen the opening hours extended and 200 members signed up so far.”
Cllr Paynter hopes that these numbers will increase in order to ensure the security of the centre.
“It would be great to see if we can increase the memberships over the next few weeks to safeguard the centre’s future,” he explained. “All users of the centre helps it stay open and other exciting plans will follow. Keep an eye on the Facebook pages for up to date information.”
