ONE of Launceston’s key community groups has been nominated for a top national award.

The League of Friends of Launceston Hospital and Community have expressed their thanks after receiving a nomination for the 2024 King’s Award for Voluntary Service.

The royal award recognises outstanding volunteer groups in the UK, with representatives from 12 Cornish voluntary groups nominated for this year's award.

The group, which has official charity status, was established back in 1971 and has been providing support and funding for Launceston’s hospital for more than 50 – celebrating the occasion back in 2021.

The group works to raise funds for the vital community service and hosting a number of volunteer events to raise awareness for the cause, as well as supporting patients.

This week it was announced that their work had been recognised via a King’s Award nomination.

FOllowing the announcement, a spokesperson for the League of Friends said: “The League of Friends of Launceston Hospital and Community had the honour of attending a reception yesterday at County Hall hosted by the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho KCVO OBE and Cornwall Council Chairman Cllr. Pauline Giles BEM.

“The event was in recognition of our nomination for the King's Award for Voluntary Service

“We are proud to be one of twelve groups nominated in Cornwall.”

Award recipients will be announced on 14 November, the King’s birthday.
