LAUNCESTON College drama teacher, Madeleine Spink, ‘braved the shave’ in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support on Thursday, November 24.

Her hair was expertly shaved by apprentices from Launceston College’s hair and beauty salon.

Madeleine’s world was turned up side down back in the summer when her husband Patrick was diagnosed with cancer, so she decided to make a difference.

Madeleine said: “In June we found out that my husband has cancer and our lives changed completely. At 35 it seemed he was too young, but testicular cancer commonly hits between 15 and 40.

“The following few months would have been impossible without the love and support of amazing family, friends and also the NHS and Macmillan. They have been with us, literally 24/7. I cannot praise them enough.

“I felt it was time to give something back and let’s face it, a marathon wasn’t going to happen! I have also donated my hair to the Little Princess Trust, who make wigs for kids going through chemo. We have been blown away by the generosity and support of everyone. So far we have raised £3,500 and it can make a real difference. £185 could pay for a Macmillan grant that helps a person living with cancer heat their home; £360 could help run a large Macmillan information and support centre for a day; while £1,020 could fund a Macmillan nurse for a week, helping people living with cancer and their families.

“It is so important to check regularly and if you are worried it is vital that you go to your GP. Early diagnosis can make a huge difference to your prognosis. We have had great news recently; the chemo has worked and Patrick is now clear of cancer. I hope that by raising awareness and raising money we can help others in similar situations.”
