THE Lakers School prom – described as "perhaps the most inventive ever" – raised more than £720 for three charities.

Pupils arrived at the Speech House hotel near Coleford in many different forms of transport and was well supported by members of the school community.

The evening raised £500 for the Children's Opportunity Centre in Coleford and 'table favours' from charities raised £120 for Cancer Research and £100 for Breast Cancer Care.

It's been a busy few weeks for the school which has included a celebration of top subject performers and those who have made most progress in learning.

The school also held an activity week with students travelling far and wide.

The celebration evening included an inspiring talk by former Lakers pupil Dan Nicholls.

The annual community prize in memory of former West Dean parish councillor Basil Whittington was also presented by his wife Ann.

More than 600 students and 100 staff were involved in activities week which included a trip to the Harry Potter studios in Watford and the Imperial War Museum in London.

A group of students also worked with the Forestry Commission to improve the Sculpture Trail at Beechenhurst while others created a wildlife garden or took part in a baking competition.

Today (Wednesday) the school is celebrating its 30th anniversary with many activities on an 80s theme.

That evening will also be the opening night of the school production of Hairspray.
