IT is very much a case of veterans to the fore at Holsworthy Golf Club.

The ladies competed in a 3 BBB Stableford which organiser Eileen Pearce's team won with a score of 67 points, the threesome being Ruth Bennett, Jean Dimbleby and Eileen with following on in second place Juliet Hill, Sandra Hawkett and Lesley Richardson, 65pts, three points ahead of third placed Sue Griffiths, Gwen Adams and Jan Bostock.

Although the high winds prevailed conditions had improved for the first leg of the Veterans' Champion-ship with some good scores, none better than the 69 by John Taylor. However, not having attained the age of qualification, John's effort could not count but John Masters' score of 69 did. John headed the Division I followed by David Smith and Dave Pope both with 70s and Alan Richardson, 71. Grahame Makin's 73 saw him top the Division II list of contenders with 74s returned by Albert Taylor and Gordon Dimbleby, second and third respectively, back nine separating the two.

Two matches, both away, have also figured on the calendar both very much enjoyed in spite of the adverse weather and being the losing team on each occasion.

Firstly, Yelverton came good winning 4-2, the result as follows: captain, Tony Tomassi and John Plumstead lost 7&6, Alan Richardson and Ken McGeorge won 4&2, Colin Walmsley and Syd Pearce lost 2&1, Bill Thompson and Ian Hemmings lost 6&4, Bob Gelder and Peter Hoyland lost 3&2 and finally, Albert Taylor and Dick Webb won 3&2.

Royal North Devon lived up to its name giving Tony Tomassi and his team a right royal welcome and a beating by 4½ to 1½ notwithstanding which the players thoroughly enjoyed the day and the conviviality that abounded.

Tony Tomassi rang the changes a little but to no avail, he and Ian Hemmings lost 5&4, Albert Taylor and Ken McGeorge made it even steven winning 3&2. However, the next two pairings both lost 3&2, firstly Colin Walmsley and Syd Pearce then Alan Richardson and John Plumstead.

With newcomer Mike Richmond and Graham Makin going down 5&4, it was left to the last pair of John Faithful and Tony Houghton to make their mark with them having a terrific struggle but achieving a very creditable half. G.D.
