The story goes that Woolsery Show began after two farmers, in 1900 or thereabouts, were in the Farmers Arms at Woolsery arguing who had the best young colt.

The stallion’s owner suggested a public competition to settle the dispute and so a contest was held in a field up from the church.

The locals came to watch and refreshments were available at what was named the Woolsery Colt Show! The day was enjoyed so much that it led to an annual event which, then included pig and poultry showing, handicraft and evening dances. Popularity was so high that two policemen were asked to attend to manage the traffic jams caused by the number of horse and traps that turned up!

From this simple start, Woolsery & District Agricultural Show was born and it now celebrates its 121st event this year at Clovelly. You couldn’t get a more spectacular venue - old pasture land with the stunning backdrop of Clovelly Court and spectacular views over Bideford Bay.

Woolsery Show prides itself on continuing to be a traditional rural agricultural show organised by a dedicated team of volunteers. Our attractions are the livestock and horses themselves - no flying motorbikes or brass bands for us!! Everybody enjoys the hound parade and the team relay - this year six different teams of 2 riders and a runner with a dog will compete against the clock over the same obstacle course!

Look out for the heavy horses, the Concours D’Elegance - horse and rider in dressed in historical costume and new for this year, our exhibition of different breeds of sheep and cattle including some rare breeds. Try the Food Marquee for local delights, early Christmas shopping at the craft stalls or buy yourself a piece of farming kit or management service with the local traders! One of our most popular activities is the Family Fun Dog Show with 15 classes starting at 11.30am

As a registered charity, Woolsery Show has education as one of its key objectives. We engage with all ages - you can make some butter and watch the cows being milked at the Cattle Marquee. Learn about different fleece types and see how wool is made in our Sheep Marquee. Our second objective is to raise money for charity. Our President this year, retired vet Mark Shepherd, has chosen North Devon Hospice as his charity. They will be at the show serving snacks and managing the “Guess the weight of the ewe and her two lambs” competition.

We are indebted to the Rous family who allow us to hold the show at their lovely home. Their Landstalk event in the Clovelly Marquee at 10.00am sees Manjeet Kumari-Lal, Head of Engagement and Communication presenting Defra’s policy and strategy and she will encourage farmer debate and opinion– all are well welcome to attend.

Something for everybody - a great day out for locals and holidaymakers.
