A KARATE club in Holsworthy is hoping to send twelve of its members to Greece later this year to compete in the WKU World Championships.
Each year the competition welcomes the best of the best to different cities across the world to compete for six days in a variety of disciplines.
The Holsworthy club is known for sending members to a number of competitions throughout the year, however the WKU World Championships is the biggest of all.
Of those who have qualified, eight are under 18, ranging from eight to 17 years old.
Qualifying for such a competition isn't easy, a spokesperson from the club has explained: “To qualify to make the team the WKU (world karate and kickboxing union) holds tournaments. If you win gold in your category and there's space in your category on the team then you qualify but then you do have to go to squad training every month with the team. Or you can be selected.”
However, despite the excitement of those who have qualified as part of the squad, many are now hoping to source sponsorship to fund their travels to the Greek city. Not only do competitors require travel and hotels during their journey, but uniforms and travel to team training is not cheap.
