Kivells at Hallworthy report for Thursday, March 3, shows an increase in store cattle numbers with a better run of cattle and several fresh spring buyers now looking to source cattle.
Top price flew away to £1,240 for a grand bunch of five Charolais x steers at 22 months old sold by and A P Varcoe from Withiel, who also went on to sell another bunch of three Charolais x steers at 23mo for £1,200 and another bunch at 22mo also achieving £1,200. Not far behind, a good run of Hereford x steers from L R Pengelly from Buddock sold his best 22mo steer for £1,235, with another pair at the same age for £1,195, with four at £1,190 and other bunches going at £1,165, £1,115 and £1,110.
R G T and G E Gilbert from Ruan Minor sold three 22mo South Devon x steers for £1,025 and five Saler x steers at 21mo made £975. A 25mo South Devon x steer made £915 for T E and J M Bayly and Sons from Warbstow and Hereford x steers at 18mo £845 (x5) on behalf of D and P M E Hill from Blisland and two Aberdeen Angus x steers at 18mo made £810 for E Sleeman from Treneglos.
Heifers sold to £885 for a bunch of four Limousin x heifers at 21mo for Trenant Meat and Forage from Liskeard, who also sold five Aberdeen Angus x heifers at 24mo for £800 and four beef Shorthorn x heifers at 19mo for £780.
J P and T C Chapman from Truro saw the pick of their heifers sell for £872 for a bunch of four Limousin x heifers at 24mo and E Sleeman sold an Aberdeen Angus x heifer at 18mo for £870. Three South Devon x heifers at 20mo sold for £835 on behalf of DJ Richards from Altarnun.
The organic cattle sale saw a fast trade for all on offer, with five 23mo Welsh Black steers achieving £1,040 for C R Oates from Helston, who went on to sell a further four, also at 23mo, for £950, and topping the heifer section again with Welsh Blacks making £885 for a bunch of five at 22mo.
A small entry of draft ewes met a flying trade with an overall average of £77.46, the highest overall average seen in the South West last week. Several pens around £90 to a top of £91 from Phil Collett, of Boscastle.
Well fleshed fat hoggs were in keen demand and a lot more were needed to fulfil buyers’ orders. Top per kilo and per head was 184p for a pen of 48 kilo Texel at £88.50 for Phil Collett, of Boscastle.
A small entry of store hoggs, with several hill bred hoggs on offer, met a strong trade. Top on the day was £64 from Bill and Richard Pethick, of Trevalga, Boscastle.
More couples on offer met with interest, with more potential purchasers in attendance. Several singles around £100 to a top of £112 for Texel x from Richard Jellard, of Kersworthy, North Petherwin. Doubles topped at £140 sold by Vernon Bright, of Poundstock.
