A special and imaginative 'Golden Weekend' in May will mark the 50th anniversary of the Landmark Trust. On May 16-17, 95 per cent of the British population will be within 50 miles of a free open day at 25 Landmarks, with some opening their doors to the public for the first time, including West Blockhouse, a fortification at the entrance to the Milford Haven waterway.
Since May 1965, nearly 200 significant buildings, including 15 in Wales, have been rescued by the historic buildings charity, many of which could have been lost forever. The highlight of the weekend will be a 'Golden Moment' at 3 pm on Saturday, May 16, when local musicians across the country will simultaneously perform a piece of music at all of the 25 open Landmarks.
At West Blockhouse, the performers will be Carmarthen Symphonic Wind Band. They travel from a wide geographical area, including Fishguard, Cardigan and Llanelli, comprising of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments and play classical pieces through to music from shows, film themes, military marches and popular music. http://www.carmarthenband.co.uk/index.html">http://www.carmarthenband.co.uk/index.html
West Blockhouse has a proud history and was a fortification completed in 1857 and used until after the Second World War. It had a single battery of six heavy guns commanding the entrance to the harbour with defensible barracks behind to give protection from attack on the landward side. West Blockhouse was rescued by the Landmark Trust and is available to rent for short breaks throughout the year.
All of the musicians will perform a specially-commissioned piece entitled 'Lines Loops Bones and Stones: An Anthem For Landmark', created by Kerry Andrew; winner of two 2014 British Composer Awards in the Education and Community and Stage Works categories for two of her recent operas.
Groups will create their own composition inspired by a toolbox of musical fragments created by Kerry. Each group will explore and arrange into their own distinctive work which will be inspired by the history, location and nature of their local Landmark.
All 25 performances will be bound together by an emblematic chorus with a strong melody line that will celebrate the nature of the Landmarks and the people who not only created and lived in them, but those who enjoy them today.
Kasia Howard, engagement manager at the Landmark Trust said: "As well as Landmarkers, we would love to see the local community during the Golden Weekend - people for whom the West Blockhouse is part of their local scene, and who perhaps knew the building before its restoration. This is a chance for us to celebrate Britain's amazing history with everyone, as it exists all around us today.
"We are delighted to be working with Kerry and are over the moon with the range and quality of local musicians and singers involved. Each group will bring the special qualities of their setting and local cultural and musical influences."
Kerry Andrew concluded: "I am really excited to be creating a piece jointly with 25 community music ensembles around the country. I see the piece very much as a collaboration between me and the musicians and their buildings, being made up of lots of small fragments that can be 'built' into a piece to suit them. I can't wait to hear the eventual pieces, which will undoubtedly be as different and beautiful as the buildings themselves are."
Everybody is welcome to visit any of the 25 Landmarks for free and hear the local musicians below interpreting Kerry's composition at 3 pm on Saturday, May 16. The 25 Landmarks will be open to everybody from 10 am until 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17.
