Five-year old Elly Neville, a pupil at Pembroke Dock Community School, is flying the Pembrokeshire Flag to raise vital funds for the planned upgrade of facilities at Ward 10, Withybush Hospital.

Elly, the daughter of Lyn and Ann Neville, of Pembroke, recently won first prize in a competition at school by making a collage of the Pembrokeshire Flag. The competition was run as part of the school's St. David's Day celebrations.

The Neville family have decided to raffle the flag to raise valuable funds for a cause which is very close to their hearts - the refurbishment and upgrade of Ward 10, the dedicated cancer ward at Withybush Hospital.

Ward 10 at Withybush Hospital has been an incredibly important haven for cancer patients in Pembrokeshire. Lyn was a patient at the Chemotherapy Day Unit (CDU) and Ward 10 himself after a bone marrow transplant in 2005. It was the dedicated staff and facilities of the CDU and Ward 10 that provided care, support and life saving treatment during his recovery.

Ann Neville said: "Ward 10 was a safety net to us during Lyn's treatment and recovery. Staff were always on hand to provide reassurance and support at an anxious and frightening time. That great care, support and advice were only a short trip away and as a family we will never forget the care we received."

Lyn Neville said: "The CDU and Ward 10 at Withybush Hospital have played an important part in the lives of cancer patients in Pembrokeshire and their families over many years. With funding in place for the expansion and refurbishment of the CDU and Hywel Dda University Health Board committed to the upgrade of Ward 10, we as a family are pleased to be doing what we can to support the planned developments."

Lyn said: "We hope that the generous people of Pembrokeshire will support our fundraising campaign. The flag was a real family effort, we all helped Elly with her design and we were delighted that she won first prize.

"We have received assurances from the Health Board that all funds raised for Ward 10 will only be used towards the refurbishment and upgrade works, and we hope to raise as much money as we can as a family."

Elly's Pembrokeshire Flag will also be 'on-location' at various sites throughout Pembrokeshire during May and June. Remember to keep your eyes peeled for the flag and support this worthy cause!
