Larger entry with the lighter weights meeting a slightly stronger trade but as last week the heavy hoggs were harder to place.

Overall average of 325.8ppk. Top per kilo being 350ppk for 44kgs £154 from David Manfield, Morwenstow. 346ppk from Mr M Johns, Winkleigh for 40.3kgs £139.50. Two vendors realised 344ppk, David Manfield, Morwenstow 42.6kgs £146.50 and G Ward, Iddesleigh 43kgs £148. Heavies topped at £160 from G Heywood & Son, Buckland Brewer.

Draft Ewes

More on offer and a flying trade from start to finish.

Overall average being £155.62. Charollais ewes from Richard Turner, Marhamchurch topped the day at £258. Suffolk x ewes to £207 from the Crocombe family, Germansweek. Texel x ewes to £199 from JW Shepherd & Sons, Jacobstow. Mules to £193 sold by Graham Heard, Hartland. Polled Dorset ewes to £190.

Couples 40E & 58L

Again a flying trade. Doubles to £355 from two vendors, Steve Poad, Saltash for Suffolk x and Daniel Norman, Dolton for Texel x Doubles. Singles to £258 for Suffolk x from Steve Poad, Saltash.

441 Calves

A big show of 441 calves, the best calves selling to huge money however, the mediums and smaller types not quite so dear.

Weaned Calves

Top price for weaned calves was £780 for young 5 month old British Blue bulls from JT & RL Pomeroy, Bradworthy, with Aberdeen Angus bulls to £700 for MJ Taylor, Ilfracombe. Heifers to £690 for British Blue from DW & SE Turner, Torrington who also sold two Aberdeen Angus heifers to £640.

Milk Calves

Strong calves making huge returns.

Reared British Blue bulls to £800, £740 for GC & LA Jones, Crediton, younger sorts to £720 for TA & SJ Kempthorne, Trewalder and £660 for LJ Goaman & Sons again. A large consignment of young fresh British Bulls at 4 weeks old in from Chris Tucker, Truro achieved an unbelievable trade and reached £570 with 17 of his other bulls over £500.

Hereford bulls to £670 for O Petherick & Son, Kilkhampton, £598 for S & J Cook, Filleigh, £520 and £495 for ARP Farming, Pancrasweek.

Friesian Bulls

Top price a huge £370 for O Petherick & Son again, £265 (x2) for BH & AE Worth again and £230 for RA JF RH Poole again.

With many younger Friesian bulls between £90-£135. Fleckvieh bulls to £220 for Hedden & Sons, Weare Giffard.

250 Store Cattle

A much better quality of cattle this week, drew buyers from far a field and the trade flew from the off.

Very few large cattle on offer with top being £2400 for a 18mth well fed British Blue from Mr J Angell, Holsworthy, whose consignment of fifty 12-18mth Continental and Native steers and heifers averaged an impressive £1930. Other 17mth British Blues from the same stable £2220.

Three 22mth British Blues from Mr PG Hobbs, Kilkhampton £2140. Others from MW, DM, WM Jenkin, Brays Shop £2100. A strong Limousin trade. A further consignment from Messrs CT Banbury & Son, Broadwood £2180. Others from Messrs H & M Thorne, Umberleigh £2160 and a 20mth Limousin from Mr WN Henderson, Bideford £2140.

Others from Messrs CT Banbury & Son, Broadwood £2100 & £2090. Natives as always in demand. £2140 the top for two 18mth Herefords from Mr J Angell, Holsworthy, who sold other Herefords at £2000 and topped the Aberdeen Angus £1940 for four at 16mths.

Heifers again from Mr J Angell, Holsworthy, who sold British Blues to £2150. Other 17mth British Blues form Messrs DF & ER James, Halwill £2010. £1960 for four from Messrs CT Banbury, Broadwood, who sold two 21mth Limousin heifers £1990. Other Limousin heifers 20mths from Mr WN Henderson, Bideford also £1990.

Native heifers saw Herefords from Messrs FJ & DG Francis, Holsworthy £1920. 16mth Aberdeen Angus heifers from Mr J Angell, Holsworthy £1850 and Devon heifers 24mths from Mr MW Pearce, Barnstaple £1780. A good run of Norwegian steers from Mr JL Bartlett, Barnstaple £1960 (3), others £1820 (2) and £1740 (3).

Younger Store Cattle

The stronger 14mth cattle topped at £1790 for three British Blues from Messrs DF & ER James, Halwill.

Limousins from the same farm £1760 and Herefords 12-13mths £1670 (6), who sold 15mth Limousin heifers £1600 and young 13-14mth Hereford heifers selling well at £1500 and £1430. Other young Aberdeen Angus steers from Mr IJ Watson, Pyworthy £1410 (3) and £1360 (6), with heifers to £1400.

Suckled steers to £1590 for four 10mth steers from Mr DJ Slee, Sheepwash. 11mth devon steers from Mr MW Pearce, Barnstaple £1580 and £1360 (2). More young cattle urgently required.

Next week at Holsworthy Market Sale of 250 Store Cattle to include 20 forward quality 18-20mth single suckled Limousin steers and heifers. 50 TMR fed 12-18mth Blue, Angus and Hereford steers and heifers.

35 Dairy Cattle

A smaller entry for today’s dairy sale saw a super trade.

Topping the sale at £3100 was a 2nd calving cow ‘Littlweir Redcarpet Unice’ yielding 39Kgs on behalf of Messrs J & SW Murch of Umberleigh who also sold another 2nd calver ‘Littlewier Esquire Cherie GP81’ at £2950. Messrs Hugo of Bodmin continued their Dispersal with a 2nd calving cow topping at £3050 and a 2nd calving ‘Rhude’ bred cow realising £2850.

Heifers topped at £2450 for Alan & Karenza Hembrow of Lostwithiel with others from the same vendor selling to £2300 and £2250. Richard Sainsbury of Launceston sold an excellent consignment of British Friesian Bulling Heifers which saw a top of £1200 with others selling to £1020 (X8) and the consignment averaging £1023. Holstein Friesian Bulling Heifers topped at £900 on behalf of Nigel & Fiona Cleave of Bude.
