771 Prime Sheep, 70 Draft Ewes and Rams

Just under eight hundred hoggs and as seen throughout the country they met a strong trade, and again the heavies meeting an easier trade. Overall average being 314.7ppk.

The fleshed light hoggs sold to a top of 347ppk from Ivor Prouse, Holsworthy. Chris Jenn, Woolsery saw his 42kgs realise 336ppk £141. Rob Johns, Bradworthy made 331ppk for his 45kgs £149. Top per head was £149.50 from six vendors.

New Season Lambs

Just a handful which saw a top price per kilo of 373ppk for a pen of sappy 41kgs £153 from the Stephen family, Holsworthy.

Draft Ewes

Smaller entry and even though we have seen the festival come and go the trade this week was still very strong. Average £145.41. Top on the day was £218 for Texel x ewes from Mr D Robins, Taddiport, Torrington.

Charollais x ewes to £197 from WH Ley & Sons, Thuborough, Sutcombe. Several pens of Suffolk x £180 and over to a top of £190 from SJ Murrin & Son, Monkokehampton. More ewes wanted next week please.

Couples 55E and 68L

Similar entry met a strong trade. Dorset Doubles to £320 from David Norman, Dolton, who also topped the singles at £222.

445 Calves

Weaned Calves

Very few weaned calves forward, those that were sold well again reaching £910 (6m) for a sweet Blue steer in from Pete Cherry up from Bodmin and Charolais heifers to £740 (6m) for PJ Bowden down from Ilfracombe.

Milk Calves

Just an all-round serious trade. Best young sappy Charolais bulls rose to £658 for LJ Goaman, Hartland who had 9x other Charolais bulls over £58.

Blue bulls up to £630 sold by Peter Denton, Lostwithiel more to £585 for Ross Denning, Truro with other calves up from Truro to £580 for a month-old Blue bull in from Chris Tucker, who had 30 other calves over £500. A super run of Hereford bulls raced away to £600 for TJ Daniel, Sutcombe who sold other £560, £520 and £500 with all Hereford bulls averaging over £300 with plenty of plain types penned.

Angus bulls an absolute storming trade reaching £555 for TJ Daniel again others to £540 E Balsdon, Launceston and £512 JR & A Down, Whiddon Down. A super Limousin bulls sailed up to £560 in from WS Bond, Putford other very young sorts looking a whopping price at £470 for Sam Vickery, Bude. Longhorn bulls an impressive trade reaching £460 for RG Denning, Truro again.

Heifers just an incredible trade topping at a massive £580 for a sweet Blue heifer in from WD Medland, Whitstone, others at £560 WJ Hobbs & Son Morwenstow and £550 K&L Care, St. Austell with 13 other Blue Heifers over £500. Charolais heifers topped at £570 for LJ Goaman again who had more to £558, £555, £550, £530 and £522 with 11 Charolais Heifers averaging £523.

A highlight of the day was Belted Galloway heifers selling to an unheard of trade reaching £530, £400, £350, £320, £300, £290 all in from Leeson Farming Partnership. Angus Heifers in huge demand topping at £540 E Balsdon, others £480 N Cleave, Bude and £435 LJ Goaman.

Hereford heifers to £425 for a super type in from Max Daniel, Sutcombe, followed by father Phil making £405 of his. Limousin heifers to £505 WJ Hobbs and son with younger sorts to £392 for AJ&PE Nancekivell, Kilkhampton.

Friesian Bulls

28 Friesian Bulls average £201 reaching £470 for Robert Harris & Family, Winkleigh with heaps of Friesian Bulls over £250.

374 Store Cattle

Another cracking sale this week at Holsworthy, with several real quality consignments on offer.

A superb entry of single suckled Limousins from Messrs WD & ME Walter, West Putford saw strong bidding with a top call of £2530 for a 23mth Limousin, who sold others £2490, £2440 and £2430. Other single suckled Limousin and Charolais from Messrs G & H Butt £2390 and £2270 (4).

Other single suckled Simmental steers from Messrs A Walter & Son, Hartland £2320. A consignment of well fed TMR Dairy x steers and heifers from Mr J Angell, Holsworthy saw Aberdeen Angus 17mths to £2400, others 15mths £2160. 12-16mth Aberdeen Angus heifers £2160.

British Blue steers 16-17mths £2230 and British Blue heifers to £1980, others £1700. A further consignment from Messrs D Cornish, Welcombe saw the best of his 14mth Aberdeen Angus x Friesian steers £2270, others £1970 and 14mth Aberdeen Angus heifers £1870 (2) and £1570.

Hereford x steers from Mr AJ Facey, Chilsworthy topped at £2280. Five others from Messrs CW & AL Wickett, Merton £2000. Young 14mth Herefords from Mr J Angell, Holsworthy £1960. The heifer trade was flying with a top of £2370 for two 24mth Limousins from Messrs WD & ME Walter, West Putford, who sold others £2210.

Dairy x Limousins from Mr AJ Facey, Chilsworthy £2230. British Blues to £2300 for a heifer from Messrs WR Manfield & Son, Morwenstow. A run of Dairy x British Blue heifers from Mr AJ Facey, Chilsworthy £2170 (3).

Simmental heifers from Messrs A Walter & Son, Hartland £2230 (3). A run of silage only fed Charolais heifers from Messrs G & H Butt, Okehampton £2040 (4), others £2000.

Younger Stores

The trade was lit this week, way up again on previous weeks.

A 13mth Limousin from Messrs RJ & WT Prouse, Torrington topped at an impressive £2450. 14mth Aberdeen Angus steers from Mr J Angell, Holsworthy £2160. Other 9mth Aberdeen Angus from the same farm £1500, who also topped the British Blue heifers 10mths from the same farm £1980.

Others £1700 who also sold young 5-7mth British Blue steers £1210, £1180 and £950 and young British Blue heifers £960 and £850. Six 9mth Charolais steers from Messrs G & H Butt, Okehampton raced away to £1780.

Other 9-10mth single suckled Charolais from Messrs AJ & DE Kind, Monkokehampton £1620 (2) and £1580 (3), whose 9mth heifers hit £1530 (5). Herefords in short supply. A run of single suckled from Mr N Aris, Torrington topped at £1600, other 10mth steers £1400 (4). More young cattle urgently required please.

Grazing Cows

£1390 was the top for a 10yr old Simmental cow from Mr SJ Stevens, Barnstaple. A young 44mth Hereford cow from Messrs J Congdon & Son, Saltash £1380.

Finished Cattle

348ppk was the top for a lightweight Limousin from Messrs W & M Bridgman, Jacobstow.

17 Dairy Cattle

A smaller entry for today’s dairy sale saw a tremendous trade which continued to increase during the sale.

Topping the sale at £3,600 was a 1st calving heifer ‘Glendene Bertha 158’ yielding 34Kgs on behalf of Messrs H Burrows & Son of Woolacombe with the same vendors selling other fresh calved heifers to £2900 (X3) and their consignment averaging £2970.

SFB Agricultural Services of Bideford sold fresh heifers to £2900 & £2450. Dave and Sherrie Turner of St Giles in the Wood continued their Herd Dispersal selling freshly calved heifers to £2450 & £2300.

A limited entry of cows topped at £2800 for a 2nd calver yielding 40Kgs on behalf of John & Sarah Sandercock of Launceston with Messrs H Burrows & Son selling a 2nd calving cow ‘Glendene Beauty 51’ at £2550.
