AN ASSEMBLY of 49 tractors left H N Sillifant’s yard at Davidstow on March 20 and set off towards Hallworthy, through Tresparrett and Boscastle.

The contingent called in at the Nute family at Tintagel for refreshments before continuing through Tintagel, Delabole, St Teath and Camelford, and finally across Davidstow Moor, down through Treglasta and ending up at the Wilsey Down, Hallworthy.

The tractor run was in aid of Macmillan, and in memory of Brian Hayne who lost his fight against cancer on new year’s eve.

Tom Herrington, a work colleague and friend of Brian, was instrumental in organising the entire event.

The last vehicle in the convoy was the lorry belonging to Sillifants that Brian had been driving until quite recently.

The tractors ranged from very new to some old vintage machinery.

Several had passengers and a couple had trailers with capacity to take passengers safely.

A spokesperson said: “It was a spectacular sight to see them coming towards you. The drivers were like the tractors, some very young and some not so young. It was a lovely tribute and a very enjoyable day.”

Brian’s family were overwhelmed by the turn-out and extremely touched.

The day was made even more special by the fact that a Fordson Major that Brian had restored just before he died took part in the run.

Brian had given the tractor to his first grandson, Matthew, but at five-months-old he was a little too young to take part so his dad drove it on Matthew and Brian’s behalf.

On the day over £700 was raised between entry fees, raffles and donations and money has continued to be donated since.

Many thanks have been extended to everyone that helped or contributed, particularly the Wilsey Down, Camelot Garage, Boscastle Farm Shop, Bruallen, MKH Machinery, the Dawe family, the Pethick family and Sillifants.

Due to the event’s success, there are plans to make it an annual event.
