The annual Abergavenny Eisteddfod reaches its climax on the evening of Saturday 20 June, with the finals of the adult singing and instrumental competitions taking place at the Borough Theatre.

Among the competitions are the Under 25 Solo, a showcase for great singers of the future, and the Song from a Musical, always entertaining.

As a first this year, the winning choir from the junior eisteddfod in March - Llantilio Pertholey Church in Wales Primary School - will open the concert, with the performance which won them the inaugural Douglas and Edna Edwards Shield.

They'll be followed by three local star instrumentalists: Molly Bradley on the piano, Cara Newsam playing her harp and and flautist Katie Davies, chosen by the adjudicators on March 14 as the best performers of the afternoon.

Then the adult performers take over – the pick of the crop, after a day's preliminary competitions at the Methodist Church on Castle Street.

Visitors are welcome at the prelims, from 11.00 am onwards, to see all the competitors, and to see if they agree with the judges' selections of the three or four best acts who will perform on stage in the evening. They will be accompanied by the talented pianists Jeanette Massocchi and James Joseph, a treat in itself.

The evening's MC this year is Frank Olding, Chairman of the National Eisteddfod's organising group, which is working hard to bring the event to Abergavenny in 2016.

Although this will be on a hugely different scale to Abergavenny's eisteddfod, some of the National's regular winners are competing in our own event on Saturday, showing its popularity as a magnet for talent.

Prizes of up to £250 are awarded to the winners, courtesy of sponsors like the Abergavenny Rotary Club, Local History Society and – another first – Keith Price Garages.

Their generosity ensures that Saturday's audience will enjoy a wonderful evening's entertainment with some of South Wales' best musicians.

Tickets (free for children up to 18) are available from the Borough Theatre Box Office (01873 850379) and there is more information about the Eisteddfod on http://www.abergavennyeisteddfod.co.uk">www.abergavennyeisteddfod.co.uk
