HOLSWORTHY Primary School recently took part in the Youth Sports Trust National Sports Week along with thousands of other schools across the UK.
National School Sport Week was a week long celebration to recognise the power physical education and sport has in improving young people’s wellbeing.
As part of the week the children took part in an enrichment day, which involved a range of different activities all linked to the five ways to wellbeing, being active, learning, giving back, connecting and taking notice.
All the children were fully engaged during the day, each flourishing in different areas. They took part in a litter pick and fun run in the park, developed their mindfulness during a yoga session and participated in a handball session and sitting volleyball.
The children were also busy making alternative, healthy treats, including pitta pizzas, avocado brownies, fresh tomato and basil pasta and granola pots.
They then sold the food produce at the end of the day to reinforce the idea of ‘giving back’ and raised money for the Youth Sport Charity.
Miss Lewis, the physical education lead, said: “The day really highlighted the importance of physical education and the ability it has in bringing people together. Children who may be less confident in other academic areas really shone during enrichment day and it provided children with different opportunities they may otherwise not encounter.
“The children really became aware throughout the day that our wellbeing isn’t always about who is the ‘fastest’ or the ‘fittest’ but it is about feeling good inside and out and making sure we have a good social, emotional and mental health.”
