A NEW youth group for 11 to 16-year-olds starts at Bridge Community Centre/Church in Pennygillam Industrial Estate, Launceston, tomorrow night (Friday).

Shift Youth Club, which is the idea of youth worker Jordan Duke, offers the opportunity for youngsters to spend two hours taking part in a variety of activities every Friday during school term time.

Explaining the thinking behind it, Jordan said: “We see a need in the community for a safe place for young people to come along, be themselves and have some fun.

“We want to build a family culture where young people want to invite their friends and spend their Friday nights together.

“There are other youth clubs in the town but we have great facilities and we want to link in with the young people we see coming through the community centre.

“My job as a youth worker is to work with 11 to 18-year-olds and this is a great chance to meet new people, build strong relationships and help them through some of the tougher times in their life. We also have a great team of volunteers getting involved who similarly have a heart to work alongside the young people.

“We will look to run events off the back of it using facilities such as our laser tag arena.”

Each session runs from 7pm-9pm and costs just £1, while the community centre’s minibus will run and will pick up from three stops around Launceston.

Jordan said: “The bus is for those whose parents aren’t able to give them a lift. It will go via the entrances of Lanstephan (6.45pm) and Ridgegrove (6.50pm) before heading to the town centre (6.55pm) opposite the White Hart next to the taxi rank. There’s also possibilities of more areas dependent on the need!”

Activities and facilities available include a pool table, table tennis, cage football, Fifa competitions, Xbox, craft, films, as well as tuck (sweets), milkshakes, pizza, with a great chill-out area for coffee and cake, plus a whole lot more.
