ADVENTURE Learning Academy Trust (ALAT) has said that its new trustees have voted for its schools to be rebrokered, including Altarnun Primary School.

The decision means that new academy trusts will be found for ALAT’s five schools, all in Cornwall — Altarnun Primary School, Liskeard Hillfort Primary School, Gulval School in Penzance, Tywardreath School and Fowey River Academy.

The regional schools commissioner, alongside Department for Education colleagues, will now work to identify, and decide, the new academy trust or trusts that will sponsor the schools.

They will provide the expertise, support and stability needed to allow the academies to belong to a successful trust. At a recent meeting when the board met with the drive teams and the principals, the board recognised the dedicated teams who are working within each of the ALAT schools.

Paul Baker, the trust’s regional executive principal, was particularly praised for working diligently to keep the focus on the pupils and their love of learning.

ALAT has recently come under new interim executive leadership and a new board. The interim chief executive officer is Angela Barry, with Lee Miller the interim chief operating officer.

Both have track records of running successful, well-managed academy trusts.

Ms Barry was the chief executive of Woodland Academy Trust and was a member of the Headteacher Board of the Regional Schools Commissioner for the South East and South London. Lee Miller is also the deputy chief executive of the high-performing Thinking Schools Academy Trust.

Ms Barry said: “It is absolutely right that ALAT’s academies are able to start afresh. This will be a new chapter for each of them, under strong and well-run academy trusts. It is a very positive step that will provide long-term stability and ensure pupils get the first-class education they deserve.

“I know that the regional schools commissioner will want to move as quickly as possible to identify the sponsors, and to rebroker the schools. In the meantime, everyone associated with each school should have confidence that my team and I will continue to make every decision in the best interests of pupils.”

ALAT’s trustees are led by the chair, Steve Baber, who is also chair of the Chulmleigh Academy Trust (CAT). Steve, who is a national leader of governance, joined CAT in November 2011 and became the chair in September 2012. Steve has had a career within education and children’s services.

Both interim appointments, working with the new trustees and members, have significantly increased leadership capacity and expertise across the trust.
