ST CATHERINE’S CofE Academy, Launceston, pupil Ella-May Bennellick has won a pregional award in engineering.

Ella-May, five, was the South West winner of the ‘If You Were an Engineer What Would You Do?’ competition run by the Primary Engineer Programmes, beating off stiff competition from primary school children up to the age of 11.

Class teacher, Anna Rowe, said: “Every year St Catherine’s school have entered the children into a national engineering competition. The children are given the task to create a new object that they think the world would need — in other words become an engineer.

“Ella-May was inspired by her brother learning to tell the time that she created a talking wrist watch that allowed the children to hear the time as well as the activity they normally do at that time. For example “It is 12 o’clock — it is lunchtime”.

“Ella-May was only four-years-old when she entered her design and won the primary South West region design. This meant she was competing against all other primary schools from Bristol downwards and competing against four to 11-year-olds. She went to Bristol University to receive her award.”
