STUDENTS from Cornwall and Devon are gaining an invaluable insight into life in the Royal Navy at HMS Raleigh.

Duchy College is the only college in the UK to attend a phase one or initial training establishment on a regular basis and during the latest visit, military academy students had the opportunity to tackle the assault course.

The assault course is normally carried out during week nine of training for the Royal Navy. After being shown how to deal with each obstacle, the students then competed in two teams for the fastest time.

Students also spent time with drill leaders (DLs) and practiced some rifle drill, as well as receiving a brief on the weapon systems the Royal Navy use. They had the opportunity to get hands on with the Glockenspiel Pistol, SA80 A2, and carbine and the general purpose machine gun (GPMG).

There is a courses and careers advice event on Saturday, March 24, from 10am until midday for students who may be interested in sport and adventure sport courses to come along and meet the teams and explore the facilities.
