A WOMAN from Launceston is hoping to get to the grand final of the UK Calendar Girls competition this year.

Donna Young is entering her third year as a UK Calendar Model applicant, and hopes to reach the grand final for this year’s competition, earning herself a well-deserved profession in modelling.

Voting went live on June 7, giving Donna just five weeks to rack up as many votes as she can to get to the final stages in August.

She was successful in reaching last year’s grand final, which included a red carpet event for 80 applicants and their friends and family at Pryzm Nightclub in Bristol.

The event supports the Chestnut Appeal, helping support people with prostate cancer, and for this year they are also supporting mental health charities.

Donna said: “It’s important to me because I have had a lot of cancer in my family, not prostate cancer as such, but we have had experiences of cancer.

“Voting started on June 7, and I have five weeks to get as many votes as I can so I can win the competition and become a published model. This is my third year doing it, so it’s pretty good.”

The Calendar Girls was launched in 2006 by Myles Lockwood from Plymouth, who was looking to help female and male models break into the industry. He wanted to donate proceeds from the calendar to cancer-based charities after his mum lost her life to the disease.

The venture has raised over £41,000 for different cancer charities, and has expanded from Plymouth, Bournemouth and Bristol to all of the UK under the name of ‘UK Calendar Girls’.
