DEVON Army Cadets held its first “Christmas Cracker” weekend at Okehampton Battle Camp recently.

Over 200 Cadets from across the county attended for a festive fun, learning, and camaraderie weekend. The event brought cadets and adult volunteers together for an unforgettable experience packed with seasonal spirit and skill-building activities.

The weekend kicked off on the Friday evening with carol singing. Saturday was action-packed with a round-robin of activities designed to hone core skills such as STEM, shooting, navigation, CIS (communications and information systems), first aid, and archery.

Some of the highlights were a festive first-aid scenario where cadets were tasked with saving Santa and an Elf, combining fun with practical skill application. Additionally, cadets had the opportunity to participate in a Dementia Awareness course, earning a certificate while enhancing their understanding of this illness. Another popular activity on Saturday was the Wellbeing workshop, “Making a Gift,” which facilitated creativity and kindness during the holiday season.

To top it off the cadets were treated to a Mr Whippy ice cream with a visit by the British Forces Broadcasting Service ice cream van. It might have been a bit chilly but that didn't stop the cadets or adults from enjoying an ice cream! Saturday evening, saw a disco and a Christmas Jumper competition!

Sunday’s grand finale included a presentation parade, bingo and a Christmas anthems singalong. The parade was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements and qualifications that our cadets and adult volunteers have obtained. Of particular note, was a presentation of Four-Star and Master Cadet badges, as well as two Good Service Awards and a Cadet Force medal. These awards and badges are only gained through hard work and commitment.

Good service - Capt Matthew Sanders

A cheque presentation was also made following the Walk Around the World Challenge in September, Devon ACF was pleased to present one of our two charities Jeremiah's Journey with a cheque for £490 plus gift aid.

The Christmas Anthems sing along was a huge hit had the entire camp rocking to festive classics like Merry Christmas Everybody, Do They Know It’s Christmas?, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and more.

Commandant of Devon Army Cadet Force Col Steve Frost said: “This weekend has truly showcased the magic of the Army Cadet Force. The idea for the weekend was formed following feedback from our Senior Cadets at camp and how they had missed seeing their friends from other companies” he continued “We decided we would bring cadets and adults together to celebrate the festive season while developing key skills and building lifelong friendships. I am pleased to say it has been mission accomplished.”

The Christmas Cracker Weekend was an example of the ACF’s commitment to providing young people with opportunities to learn, grow, and have fun.
