A garden and social spaces for the community to use is being created in one of Pembroke's walled gardens with the kind permission of Pembrokeshire Housing Trust.
The garden is the work of one of the sub-groups of Pembroke 21C Community Association. It was severely overgrown and unused, but is now mostly cleared with raised beds growing lots of seasonal vegetables.
With funding from Keep Wales Tidy Natural Buzz Wild Weekend, and the Millennium Stadium Charitable Trust, the group have been able to plant herbs and wild flowers and grow a good crop of seasonal vegetables.
Working with young people from the Tanyard Youth Project, they are creating outdoor cooking and eating areas in a small orchard of heritage fruit trees. The young people will also help to build a shed with funding raised previously from a sponsored abseil of Pembroke Castle keep.
"The garden is and probably always will be work in progress," said John Hogg, one of the volunteers working on the garden, "but we want it to be open for the community to enjoy either by working in it, just enjoying being in it or eating produce from it. It is a community space."
Weekly Saturday morning work parties are held in the garden for all who live in the community to take part in.
