Neyland Community School is giving bees and butterflies a helping hand, with support from a new initiative launched by one of Wales' leading environmental charities.
Natural Buzz is a pollinator initiative run by Keep Wales Tidy in partnership with the Horticultural Trade Association and Green Space Wales and funded by the Welsh Government's Nature Fund.
The initiative combines practical demonstration and a voucher scheme to support action for pollinators in communities across Wales.
Neyland Community School is one of five practical demonstration sites across Wales. Keep Wales Tidy is working with pupils from Neyland's Eco Club to transform the school grounds into a blaze of wildflowers and colour.
With the recent decline in pollinators, Natural Buzz aims to deliver action on the ground to benefit biodiversity and deliver community benefits to the surrounding areas while raising awareness of the importance of pollinators for the local environment and urging the public to take action to help support them and their natural habitat.
Work at Neyland's demonstration site reached a new milestone last week as the Eco Club took part in its first planting day. Nine pupils joined in, sowing a rainbow mix of wildflower seeds and planting 30 perennial shrubs including Lavender, Sedum, Borage, Aster and Goldenrod. An apple tree and a flowering currant will be planted at a later date.
Carl Sargeant AM, Minister for Natural Resources, said: "We must recognise that our communities, our economy and our environment are closely interlinked. Improving biodiversity is key to sustainable land management. By recognising these links, we can improve our environment and deliver economic and social benefits for Wales. Our investment is directed at achieving the maximum possible long-term benefit."
The Nature Fund is part of a wider approach in moving towards the integrated management of natural resources in Wales, encouraging collaboration and understanding of local challenges in order to tackle issues in a way that is best for communities in Wales.
Lesley Jones, chief executive of Keep Wales Tidy, said: "I'm delighted that the community of Neyland has the opportunity to make a very real difference to pollinator habitat thanks to the Natural Buzz initiative. Keep Wales Tidy would like to thank the Welsh Government and partners for their support in helping care for pollinators and their local environment."
