A DESIRE for a change in lifestyle persuaded an Okehampton couple to snap up a village store and post office on the edge of Dartmoor National Park.
New owners have taken over Riverside Stores and Post Office in the picturesque village Bridestowe.
Devon-based commercial property specialists Charles Darrow facilitated the sale, which was motivated by the couple’s wish to try something new.
Post Office sales have become increasingly popular with a new generation of subpostmasters coming up with innovative ways to generate profits from Post Office branches, and at the heart of every expansion plan is the needs of the local community.
Post Office branches in remote locations can play an even more important role in providing services for local businesses and individuals.
Those making a success of owning a post office have seen a steady increase in business customers using the banking and mail services.
The remote location of Riverside Stores and Post Office particularly appeals to the new owners and they have plans to engage with the hub of the community and ensure the revival of the post office continues to gather pace.
The 18th century detached property includes an immaculate five-bedroom family home and garden and offers stunning countryside views.
The shop has been completely refurbished and offers an excellent range of products and services, including a large selection of locally sourced produce, there is also a tearoom with outside seating next to the river.
The building was sold by partners Kris and Dave Atherley-Hewings, who have decided to focus on other interests.
Charles Darrow director Paul Heather, who oversaw the sale, said: “Post Office businesses are currently very popular with buyers looking for a change of lifestyle and we saw record number of similar lifestyle transactions in 2017.
“There seems to be a growing desire for people to leave larger towns and cities in favour of a more relaxed, quality of life in the rural Westcountry.
“Buying a village store, public house or B&B is a great way for people to achieve their dream move.”
