Proposals to trial a 'zoned' residents permit parking area in Tenby have been put to councillors this week.
In correspondence that came before members of Tenby Town Council at their meeting on Tuesday night, Pembrokeshire County Council said that an option they were considering was the introduction of a 'permit parking zone', which would see a number of roads within a defined area made available to a permit holder, rather than a specific street.
"Currently, up to 50 per cent can be designated resident parking, with the remaining 50 per cent available for residents who do not wish to purchase a permit, visitors or general public," explained the county council's senior traffic manager, Ben Blake.
"This request has been made by a resident of Culver Park and seeks that up to 100 per cent of the available parking is designated permit parking for either all or part of the day on streets that are oversubscribed as found here
"The proposal would enable residents to park in close proximity to their property in adjoining streets if required, and would also address comments received that some permit parking bays are sitting empty and under-utilised," continued Mr. Blake, explaining that the scheme could be implemented on a trial basis under an experimental order for a 12-month period, if residents consulted support the proposal.
"I think that it might be a good idea to have some zoning, but maybe a step too far having it as one big zone, so maybe using Sutton Street in this particular area mentioned as a divide would work - so in effect it becomes a zone A and zone B," remarked Clr. Lawrence Blackhall on the proposals.
"Personally I think that something like this is asking for trouble, and I think it would cause rows," said Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane.
Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown said she'd support an experimental trial, but feared that other areas in the town might want it too.
"Once this starts, it won't stop," she told her colleagues.
