CORNWALL Council has confirmed that the A39 through Camelford will be reopened by 5pm today.

Fore Street was closed at the start of July following the partial collapse of a building.

At the time of the closure, a spokesperson for Cornwall Council said: “We’re working with the property owner, who is responsible for making the building safe, to make sure this work is completed as soon as possible.

“The road will remain closed until we are satisfied that the property is in a safe condition and is of no risk to the general public.”

However, today (August 2), the council announced that the route will be reopening to drivers.

A spokesperson explained: “The emergency closure was required due to an unsafe building. The owner has since undertaken works to ensure the building no longer poses a risk to the public.

“We thank businesses and residents in Camelford for their patience.”

The closure garnered much attention after local businesses revealed that the diversion had affected their trade.

North Cornwall MP, Ben Maguire also expressed his concern at the situation.

Following today’s announcement by the council, Mr Maguire said: “It shouldn’t have taken local businesses and me as the local MP shouting from the rooftops to get Cornwall Council to start communicating properly with people in Camelford and to look at all options to get the road re-opened instead of letting the closure rumble on for months and months.

“Nevertheless this is absolutely fantastic news for people and businesses in Camelford and the surrounding communities. Camelford is very much open for business and I’d encourage everyone to visit the town and support the great local businesses who have suffered immensely in the past few weeks when the road was closed.”
