A REGENERATION project based in Launceston has been awarded £100,000 as part of Cornwall Council’s Community Infrastructure Levy.

Village halls, youth centres and community spaces are among the projects across Cornwall to share in almost £1.9-million in grants from Cornwall Council.

The council launched the fourth round of the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) Fund last spring, to fund community infrastructure projects.

Now, after a vigorous and competitive application and selection process, the 23 successful projects can be announced.

Among the successful projects was the redevelopment of Launceston’s Priory Park.

Olly Monk, Cornwall Council cabinet portfolio holder for housing and planning, said: “The Community Infrastructure Levy allows us to raise funds from new developments and pass this on to community projects making a real difference.

“With this funding we are able to support many worthwhile schemes and organisations working to improve facilities and access to opportunities.

“As with previous CIL fund rounds, we were inundated with expressions of interest from worthy projects. There are many organisations working to improve life for our communities and I am pleased we are able to put CIL funding to very good use.”

More than £5.7-million of CIL funding has been awarded to projects across Cornwall since the first round in 2020.

As part of the most recent round of funding, Launceston Town Council has received vital funding for improvements at one of the town’s parks.

The council has been awarded £100,000 to implement play equipment at Priory Park in the north of Launceston.

Earlier this year, the council launched a consultation, inviting residents to the town hall to discuss what they wanted to see at the park after anti-social behaviour resulted in the damage and removal of play equipment at the site.

This week, properties manager for Launceston Town Council, Martin Cornish announced that the council have been successful in securing funding, and that the council have also pledged funding to be put towards the project on top of this.

A council spokesperson added: “Launceston Town Council is delighted to announce that it has been successful in its recent Community Infrastructure Levy Fund application and have been awarded £100,000 towards providing play equipment befitting of the town.

“The town council will also be providing part match funding towards the project.

“Due to the sums of money involved, the town council will have to follow a tender process for the works, once this is completed and a designer and installer have been appointed, we will be seeking views from the residents, as to what they would like to see as part of the play park.”

CIL applicants needed to show how there was local need and community support for their project, as well as how the projects will help alleviate the impact of development in an area or support development.
