A farewell service was held at Callington Methodist Church on Sunday, August 4, for Rev David and Mrs Alison Moss, who are retiring (or 'sitting down') after five years in the circuit.

The moving service was led by Rev Paul Smith, the steward was Su Tolman and organist Ken Pethick.

Circuit stewards Mark Pellow and Roger Daniel made presentations to David and Ali and representatives from the other local churches, town council and Royal British Legion were among the large congregation.

A lunch for 80 people was served in the Upper Room after the service.

Morning prayer at 10am. Evensong will be held at 6.30pm on Sunday, August 18.

There will be a united benefice service at Pillaton on Sunday, August 18.

This event took place in the Parish Hall at Upton Cross on Saturday, August 3, and the chairman, Michelene Norris introduced the Rev Marilyn Elliott, who was the local Anglican priest here a few years ago and opened the show.

She said how nice it was to be back to meet many familiar faces, and children who weren’t even born when she was here.

Unfortunately the vegetable section entries were down owing to the inclement weather in the important growing season but still beautiful flowers were displayed. The children also produced very interesting entries in the Art and Crafts, also photography, writing and cookery too as well as the adults. The new section for a miniature garden container was interesting too. This year there was also an opportunity to visit St Paul’s Church nearby to view the decorated floral window displays.

Twenty-six members of the Lezant Lunch Club were welcomed by Ken Scoble at Trebullett Hall on Wednesday, July 31.

Members enjoyed a delicious meal of chicken, pancetta and mushroom casserole served with roast potatoes, peas and carrots, followed by a lemon dessert.

A vegetarian alternative was available.The main course was prepared by John and Emma Morley. The dessert was made by Ros Davey. Service was provided by Irene and Helen Nash, Ann Foster, Cynthia Jewell, Helen Judge and Janet Docherty. During coffee members were entertained by a food themed quiz.

The Lezant Lunch Club meets on the last Wednesday of each month. The next lunch will take place on Wednesday, August 28, at 12.30pm at Trebullett Hall. The cost is just £5 for two courses plus coffee.

On Sunday, August 4, the members of Granville Lodge, which meets in Bude, hosted their Annual Charity Garden Party.

The event took place at the home of lodge member John Weller in Poughill and fortunately the weather remained warm and sunny.

More than 90 people attended with lodge members being accompanied by friends, family and members of other lodges. A splendid selection of homemade sandwiches and cakes was served and entertainment this year was provided by All@C, the popular local Ukulele band. A donation was made to the band who are regular supporters of Cornwall Air Ambulance. A raffle, bottle draw and several generous donations raised over £1,100 for the chosen charity, the Masonic Charitable Foundation.

The MCF was set up in 2018 following the merger of four other charities and is supported by all Masonic Lodges in Cornwall. It is based in London and administered by the United Grand Lodge of England. The funds are allocated to medical research, education, care for the elderly as well as numerous other local and national charities. A number of Cornish charities benefit from these funds.

'Murder on the High Seas', a murder mystery written and directed by Jacky Parker was performed at Bradworthy Memorial Hall on Tuesday, July 16, and on Friday, August 2.

Both evenings were a complete sell out. Thanks were expressed to Jacky, the cast, Sheila Raffe and the team of Bradworthy Ladies for laying on a delicious supper, Bradworthy Social Club for providing the Bar and Bradworthy Young Farmers for waiting tables.

There was a prize raffle and all profits from the two performances yielded profit of £1,486 and this will be shared in the community between Bradworthy St John the Baptist Church, Bradworthy Methodist Church and other charities.

PILGRIMS commenced their St James the Great Pilgrimage with Morning Prayer at the Parish Church of St James the Great on Thursday, July 25.

The service was led by Rev Teresa Folland. After the service, pilgrims walked to the Well of St James near the Old Rectory and back to the Church for Teas and Coffees. Then travelling on to St James at Jacobstow and finally to Minster Church at Boscastle.

GLORIOUS sunshine heralded a most enjoyable afternoon and evening at the Parish Church of St James the Great on Sunday, July 28. It was decided by our Parochial Church Council that we should reach out to our village and parishioners to show what our church means to our village and that we greatly care for our community and people that live in it.

It was never intended for it to be a money making event, it was a reaching out and inviting young and old into our Church community, giving something to our village and especially the children of the parish. It was an early start at 9am putting up bunting, chairs, tables, barbecue and stalls and side Shows to entertain the children including a Treasure Hunt organised by Hilbre Watts.

The churchyard was in immaculate condition as always thanks to Alan Hockin and early in the morning the church grounds became a field of entertainment for all. At 3pm a cascade of locals and visitors swarmed the church grounds eager to see what the new version of the old 'Jimmy's Day' had to offer. Kevin McGrath greeted all and received the Gift Day donations at the newly restored lych gate (new roof and slates, new gates and new lattice).

The tombola was run by Tony Davis and Rachel Jenkins. Catch the rat was ably manned by Rev Richard Ward-Smith and the nearby Barbecue was operated by Kingsley and Sarah Bryant, Robert French and Susie Cox. Guess the weight of the ewe and lamb and the number of sweets in the jar was eagerly contested by all patrons attending and thanks to Ian Mason for running this throughout the afternoon. Sandra Holmes won guess the weight of Sally the ewe and her lamb at 122kg combined weight. As her oven wasn’t big enough to cook the lamb she settled with a box of sweets as a prize.

Thank you to David Colwill of Burridge Farm, Morwenstow for the loan of Sally the ewe and her lamb for the afternoon. The number of sweets in the jar were won by Charlene’s daughter with 64 being the correct number of sweets. Many people took part in Bowling for the Pig. The best score was by a young lad called Archie who had three rubs (3x3 balls) and got five out of nine. Well done to Archie.

Guess the name of the bear was gratefully organised by Tracey Hockin and was won by Tracey Hockin. The bear’s name was ‘Rocky’ and it was definitely not fixed! The All@C Ukulele Band provided lovely background music throughout the afternoon and was enjoyed by all.

Cream teas were served throughout and were organised by Joyce Davis assisted by Myra Thomas, Jenny Reed, Ruth Davis, Lyn Ward-Smith and Brenda Dunstan, a very busy and at times hectic task, but wonderfully carried out by them all. The rear of the church was laidened with donated cakes for the Cake Stall where Margaret Cleave did a brisk trade and the stall was sold out within the hour. Thank you to all who donated cakes for this purpose. After the close of the afternoon festivities in the churchyard, Bude Metric Brass started to form up for the Songs of Praise.

At 7pm in a packed Church led by Colin Gay (band master) and Luke Francis (organist) roused the congregation with nine hymns, with St James Choir in-situ and men's singing group Bassline rendering three pieces for the Churches entertainment, Cornwall My Home, Trelawney and Let the Lower Lights be Burning. Chairman for the evening was Rev Teresa Folland. Luke Francis, gave a vote of thanks to everyone who made this revived St James' Day so very special and everyone that helped in any way.

The evening concluded with the singing of Abide With Me - a spine tingling, emotional finish to the most perfect day. We look forward to welcoming all to the 2024 Flower Festival on August 16, 17 and 18 in the church, the theme this year is 'History in the Making'. Refreshments will be served throughout and all are welcome.

TWO Cream Tea events have recently been held at the Community Centre.

On Sunday, July 7, Jennifer Vanstone and Jill Johns, with the help and support of many relatives and friends arranged a cream tea afternoon in aid of Cancer Research UK. On such a beautiful afternoon there was a massive turnout for the event and £1,600 was raised for Cancer Research UK.

A week later on Sunday, July 14, again with fine weather another cream tea event was held, this time, proceeds were for Sound Waves South West and the Jill Wellby Award was presented.

On Sunday, July 14, an evening service with the theme of 'Hope' was held at Morwenstow Methodist Chapel at Shop and was led by David and Clare Cleave.

Colin Tape was the organist for the congregational hymns which were: I'm not ashamed to own my Lord, Cornerstone, How great thou art and Great is Thy faithfulness. A poem was read by Freda Olde and Celia Cleave read from the Psalms. The Merrytones Praise Group sang: 'What colour is the wind'. David sang: 'Seeds of hope' and 'My hope is in you' accompanying himself with the guitar. Clare gave us a talk on 'Hope'. After the service there was a chance to chat when refreshments were served in The Wesley Room.

The service at Morwenstow Methodist Chapel at Shop on Sunday, August 11, was led by Ruth Bealing of Holsworthy and the theme of the service was 'Regrets and Redemption'.

Colin Tape was the organist for the hymns: ‘Great is Thy faithfulness’, ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘When we walk with the Lord’ and ‘Go forth and tell’.

The Merrytones Praise Group sang: 'You're my best friend'.

The service was followed by coffee and a chance to chat in The Wesley Room.

The July Community Breakfast, held in the Chapel Stable was a great success and was attended by around forty people.

The Community Breakfast's continue to be held on the third Saturday of each month from 9am, priced £5 and there is no need to book, all are welcome.

The coffee morning organised by Ruth Bealing and Mary Care in aid of The El Shaddai Charitable Trust - helping children in India, was held in the Chapel Stable and was a great success. There were stalls selling books, cakes, plants and all sorts of other things. As well as raising over £400 for El Shaddai, it was a most social occasion, with no-one really wanting to go home! Another Coffee Morning is planned for the autumn in the Stable and will be in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The service at Chilsworthy Methodist Chapel on Sunday, August 11, was led by Rev Stephen Skinner of Woolsery. The theme of the service was “Kindness” introduced with a story from “The Conspiracy of Kindness”.

Karen Shepherd gave the welcome and introduction and gave words of farewell to a very special lady who is leaving for a new home.

The singing was accompanied by Christine Tratt on the keyboard and with Pamela Newton, Avril Glessing and Maxine Whenmouth as vocalists.

After the service, special refreshments of traybakes were shared with coffee as a special farewell to a special lady who we hope will be very happy in her new home and we look forward to keeping in touch.

The Muddy Church Team organised 'Den Building' for the children in Chilsworthy Woods on the afternoon of Sunday, August 11, by kind invitation of Tim and Ros.

It has been a difficult time for all at the Plough recently as they’ve worked to recover after COVID. There have been a few significant changes, the most important of which is that after 24 years the organisation say goodbye to Richard Wolfenden-Brown. All the staff and trustees wish him well as he leaves an unrivalled legacy. He will be a difficult act to follow.
