THE Launceston Rotary Community Shop Fund recently awarded the Kensey Vale Bowling Club with the sum of £500.

The money will be put towards purchasing junior size woods for the growing number of young players.

Kensey Vale Bowling Club coach, Jean Wilkins, was delighted to receive the donation.

She said: “Standard bowls are too heavy for young persons, and the special woods will help with coaching and allow them to participate in competitions. The woods will be retained as club property.”

Bowls does not require great athletic strength, yet offers the opportunity for boys and girls to partake in a sport of skill and tactics.

At present they have ten junior players, aged between seven and 14 years.

Kensey Vale club president, Peter Gilbert, thanked the Rotary for the grant, and said that the aim is to encourage young players, thereby providing an interesting outlet together with ensuring a healthy future for the club.

They coach bowls as an after school activity at one Launceston Academy, and they are campaigning to introduce the game to more local schools.
