WITH Padstow withdrawing from the league this win has put the Clarets six points clear at the top of the Premier Division, writes Andy Hunt.

This was a tough game against a well organised Bere Alston side who were clearly up for the game and started the brighter of the two sides. With the home side struggling to get into their stride the away team had the best early chance when a good run down the left was followed by a shot across the goal that went narrowly wide.

A change in formation seem to settle the Clarets who started to impose themselves after the half hour mark.

The only goal of the game came in the 35th minute and was a goal worthy to win any game. Shane Hooper turned his man well on the left before passing the ball into space. Dave Andrew ran onto the pass and hit it first time from a full 25 yards. The ball flew into the net giving the 'keeper no chance.

The home side came close to doubling their lead a minute before half time when Paul Banks and Matt Andrew created a chance for Hooper who was just unable to get his foot on the cross from Banks.

The Clarets came out for the second half with more purpose and intent and played the type of football that has been prevalent throughout the opening games of the season.

With the away team pushing a second player up front this allowed Launceston the bit of space needed in the middle to open the game up. Banks saw his early left foot volley brilliantly tipped over by the 'keeper before Richard Graves, who was outstanding throughout, saw the same outcome from a thunderous 20 yard drive.

Bere Alston still looked dangerous on the break but Launceston had the better possession and looked the more likely to score. Graves again went close when he smashed a left foot half volley narrowly wide and then a good block from the defender denied Graves another chance. It was then Hooper's turn but his shot, after a great lay back from the impressive James Turner failed to trouble the 'keeper.

With time running out for Bere Alston Launceston showed their experience by playing some good "keep ball" to gain a hard earned three points against a team who are far better than their current league position.

Launceston first team are underlying the success for Pennygillam teams by climbing to third place in the Premier Division of the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League following seven consecutive league victories.
