A CHURCH has said it has no option but to sell a medieval building that houses a foodbank and a popular snooker club in Brecon.

Father Steven Griffith, priest in charge of St Mary's Church, said it must sell the Church House building in Lion Street as it needs the funds towards it roof appeal.

"If we do not fix the roof in the next two years St Mary's would close and we would have a derelict parish church in the centre of Brecon," said Father Steven.

The snooker club has launched a campaign and is collecting signatures on a petition to try and remain in the building, its home for around 100 years. It says it intends to remain in the building and has asked the church provide it with information about the building which was endowed to the church.

The foodbank has been using Church House as its store and administrative centre for free since it was established last year. Father Steven said the church is trying to assist it in finding a new base.
