THE Charles Causley Trust have opened their submissions for the 2023 Young People’s Poetry Competition.

The competition for young, aspiring writers is asking for entrants aged 5 to 18 years to have a go at writing some poetry of their own. The competition hopes to celebrate the work of Cornish poet, Charles Causley.

Marking 20 years since Causley’s death, this year’s theme is “Memory”, in reference to the brilliant work he produced during his life in Cornwall.

A spokesperson from the Trust said: “This year’s Young People’s Poetry Competition is particularly special because it will commemorate 20 years since Charles Causley passed in 2003, through its theme of Memory.

“As we as an organisation reflect on Charles’ life, work and legacy throughout the year, we look forward to reading about young people’s memories and how they reimagine them through the page.”

Poems entered into the competition will be judged by David Devanny and a panel of judges with prizes awarded for first, second, third, and Highly Commended places in each category. This year will also feature an honourable mention for a young poet based in Cornwall.

For those successful entries, awards will presented at the 2023 Festival of Arts and Literature between June 30 and July 2.
