MALCOLM Pearce was admitted to Bideford Hospital after suffering from a stroke in April and was discharged in June. Thanks to his determination and dedicated support from the staff on the Stroke Unit and his family, Malcolm is making excellent progress towards his recovery.
Malcolm is a member of The Tetcott and Luffincott Gun Club, and prior to his stroke, he enjoyed taking part in their clay shoots. Because of the excellent care and support the stroke team had given to Malcolm the Gun Club decided to raise funds for the Unit and organised a clay shoot close to Malcolm’s home at Gunnacott Farm in Clawton.
The event, organised by the gun club’s chairman George O’Connor, raised £1,800 to support patients suffering the effects of a stroke, which has been split between the Bideford Hospital Elizabeth Ward Stroke Rehabilitation Unit and the Early Supportive Discharge Service.
Mr O’Connor, said: “This was our first charity shoot, and despite a wet and windy afternoon, over 60 shooters took part. A remarkable 47/50 was achieved by Ben Westaway who took the £100 top gun prize, and Vicky Shopland was ladies’ top gun.
“My thanks to the many people who made the day happen. We had wonderful support from local businesses and individuals to the shoot, which was made possible by the generosity of Andrew Vanstone and Simon Ede of North Cornwall Gun Club, which loaned most of the traps needed for the five stands, and to George Axford, who made his land available for the shooting ground and car park.”
Malcolm’s partner Sue Lynn said: “We all had a wonderful day, and I managed to push Malcolm around the field in his wheelchair to watch the event which enabled him to be part of it.”
Bideford Hospital Ward Sister Sharon Middleton said “It is wonderful that so many of Malcolm’s friends and family came together to raise funds to support our work at Bideford Hospital. It means that we can now purchase additional equipment to treat our patients and support them in their recovery. Some of our staff attended on the day and had a lovely time.”
