The show will be celebrating its 124th year. So how did the show begin? Legend has it that around 1900 two farmers were in the Farmers Arms at Woolsery arguing over whose young colt was better. One stallion’s owner suggested a public competition to settle the quarm and so a contest was held in a field up from the church.
Locals came to spectate the thrilling event and refreshments were made available at what was named the Woolsery Colt Show. The locals loved it, revelling in what a fantastic day it was it officially became an annual event.
It went on to include a pig and poultry showing, handicrafts and evening dances. The popularity of the event was so high that two policemen were in attendance to manage the traffic jams caused by the number of horses and traps that turned up.
From humble and very Devonshire beginnings the Woolsery & District Agricultural Show was born.
At its core, the Woolsery Show is a glorious celebration of rural life in Devon, inviting the local community to unite. Whether you're a farming enthusiast, a patron of traditional crafts, or just seeking a fantastic day out, the Woolsery Show promises an experience that will capture your heart.
