THE Haslemere branch of the Royal Society of St George pulled out all the stops last Thursday to celebrate England's patron saint in style.

St George, a Dragon and a Damsel, accompanied by hand maidens and branch members processed through the town, distributing red roses, and called in to retell the story of St George at local schools and playgroups.

Haslemere shops competed to mount the best dressed window in honour of St George, a wreath was laid and an ode recited at Haslemere War Memorial, and a black-tie dinner was held by the branch at The Georgian House Hotel.

A week earlier, branch members joined representatives from the society across the country at the Cenotaph in Whitehall for a special ceremony and attended a service afterwards at Westminster Abbey.
