Bude Surf Life Saving Club have announced that they will be keeping people safe this Christmas as people enjoy their festive swim.
On Christmas Day some brave residents uphold the tradition of taking a dip into the rather chilly Atlantic.
However, an even braver bunch of volunteers will be making sure people stay safe at Bude’s Christmas swim.
The event, which originally started as a small occasion for members of Bude Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) only, now attracts people from all over the country, becoming an iconic occasion.
Because of this, BSLC now provide volunteer patrols, making sure festive swimmers stay safe.
Jayney Henwood, vice chair of Bude SLSC said: “The club provide a volunteer patrol, similar to those that we do throughout the season to support our local beach lifeguards and at times when there is a need for beach safety advice and support.
“The patrol comprises of club members whom hold a surf life saving qualification. We will be on patrol from 1100hrs to 1120hrs.
“Providing a patrolled area of the beach, for those who want to partake in Bude’s Christmas Day swim!”
The year 2023 also marks a special anniversary for Bude SLCS, marking 70 years since it was founded.
Jayne continued: “This year is Bude Surf Life Saving Club’s 70th Anniversary. We are extremely proud, as surf lifesaving in Great Britain started here in Bude! That’s 70 years of voluntary beach patrol!”
