THE chairman of Tintagel Surf Life Saving Club, Les Freke, has received recognition for his work within the club and his community work, after being presented with the British Empire Medal.
Having been dedicated to the club since 1974, 68-year-old Les has played a big role in training 120 professional lifeguards, and helped over 60 young people in developing team skills, first aid skills and how to stay safe in the water.
On Sunday, March 5, Tintagel Surf Life Saving Club held their AGM at the Mill House in Trebarwith, and Les was presented with the British Empire Medal by the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Colonel Edward Bolitho.
Upon receiving the award, Les told the Post that he was ‘obviously both delighted and surprised’.
He said: “I received the medal for my services to surf life saving and my community work as a community first responder.
“I can’t imagine I’ll be wearing it around Tintagel very much, but I’m sure it will be on display at home.”
