A CONSULTATION period on plans to close both Brecon and Gwernyfed high schools will get underway in September.
The decision to run the formal two month consultation in September and October was confirmed after the county council announced a consultation on Welsh medium education is to be held this month.
As part of the council's plans to replace the high schools with a 900 pupil 11 to 16 English medium school as part a £50 million Beacons Campus on the site of Brecon High School, Welsh medium education would be removed from Brecon.
The council is proposing Welsh streams should transfer to Builth Wells High School from September 2016.
In the long term Welsh medium education would be based at a bilingual school, with a sixth form, to serve mid Powys. The council is currently reviewing secondary education in Builth and Llandrindod Wells and it is likely one of the two schools will close.
The council is holding drop in events as part of the consultation over its plans for Welsh medium education at Brecon High on Monday, June 22 from 4pm to 8pm and at Builth Wells High on Thursday, June 25 between the same times.
Full information about the proposals will be available on the council's website and copies of the consultation documents from the schools and libraries.
The results of the consultation will be reported back to the council's cabinet later in the year.
