A Cornwall Councillor has compared a car park in the town he represents to a city abandoned after the Chernobyl disaster.  

Cllr Leigh Frost, the Liberal Democrat Cornwall Council member for Bodmin St Petroc, has called on the council to sort out the car park, which he said needs to ‘get the area looking a bit more like a car park and rather than one from Pripyat’.  

In addition to faded lines, moss growing over the spaces at the top of the car park and being overgrown, Cllr Frost added that the car park entrance was currently displaying two different charges, making it unclear to users what they should be paying.  

While the signage issue is set to be fixed imminently, Cllr Frost said that at the moment, there were no plans to tidy up and maintain the car park, with Cornwall Council’s parking team telling him that they will ‘assess and quote for works to be done’.  

In a statement to residents, he called on Cornwall Council to be timely in its work to the car park, saying: “Fore Street car park seems to have a number of issues at the moment. They’ve still got both sets of charging scheme signs up on the post as you enter, which is confusing for users!  There are quite a few faded lines, moss growing over the top spaces, plus a general overgrown and unloved look.  

“I have contacted the parking service and they have got someone coming out to fix the signage problem ASAP.  They have also said that will assess and quote for works to be done to get the area looking a bit more like a working car park and rather than one from Pripyat!  

“I’ll be keeping an eye to make sure this is done in a timely manner.”
