A GATHERING of around 40 residents from the Holsworthy area took place on Remembrance Day formally to unveil a bench dedicated to those who served during the two world wars.

Following a one-minute silence, the Rev Martin Keenan read the moving story of a bible, which had been passed down through generations of one service family that served during most major conflicts over the last century.

He told of the comfort this bible gave them throughout the dark and frightening periods of active service during wartime. Refreshments were then served in the village hall.

It has recently been discovered that a Chilsworthy resident, who served in the RAF, was injured in France and subsequently died while serving in the Second World War. This new information will be passed on to Holsworthy Museum.

Ken Carroll, who initiated the idea of the commemorative bench, thanked all who attended for their support and involvement in this act of remembrance.
