HOLSWORTHY Golf Club — Ladies first and first for the ladies was Barbara Abrams. Competing in the June Stableford she romped home a clear winner with 39 points with Lesley Richardson and Ely Walmsley trailing in her wake in second and third place respectively with 35 points.
The Sheelah Creasey team travelled to Stover to come up against not only a strong team but also a course having had many alterations done since the ladies last played there. However, although losing by 5 matches to 2, they put up a good fight and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Captain Yvonne Bowler led her team well, winning 4 and 3 and Pauline Bezzant, too, won by 3 and 1. However, losses by Betty Byrne, 5 and 4, Sue Griffiths, 3 and 2, Hilary Dorren, 3 and 1 and Gwen Adams, 4 and 3, and the retirement of Stephanie May, ensured the hosts took the honours.
The men, too, have been very active with the Monthly Medal, the second in the year-long Eclectic League, taking place - much to Gary Burnard's pleasure, his nett 61 giving him first place two shots ahead of second placed Lee Thomas with Andy Morris and Les Byrne also beating par with 67s. Andy continues to head the league table with Reg Daniel a close second and Ian Lorraine third.
Local knowledge played its part in the White Hart Open with Holsworthy's Peter Jolliffe and Bob Demott taking the top two placings with scores of 44 and 41 points respectively.
The Veterans, too, have been active and of particular enjoyment was the Dallas Scramble with the quartet of Reg Daniel, Dave Pope, Graham Makin and Ben Tole taking first place following adjustments to their score with other teams having only three players, to come in with a nett 63.1 followed by Mac Cox, Ian Harper and newcomer, Grahame Peters, 65.4 and in third place with 66 were Dave Smith, Mike Herbert and John Barnes.
The team travelled to Libbaton and almost came away with a win, losing by the narrow margin of 4 games to 3. Tony Tomassi and Roger Turner came in all square as did Alan Richardson and Brian Toop. Chris Woolley and Bill Thomson and Eric Lake and Ian Hemmings recorded wins by 2 and 1 and 2 up respectively. However, with Peter Hoyland and Bob Bentham going down 3 and 2, Albert Taylor and Alan Whittle, playing his first match, losing 2 and 1 and the last pair John Faithful and John Plumstead the wrong side of a 4 and 3 score, it was Libbaton who came out on top.
Regrettably, too, although defeating Saunton in the home leg of the Emerton Court second round by 3 and 2, the team lost overall to bow out of the competition. Alan Abrams and Ray Holness won 3 and 2, Brian Hayes and Reg Daniel, and Brian Axford and George Booth each lost 1 down with wins by Syd Pearce and Colin Walmsley, 2 and 1 and, by a similar score, Ian Hemmings and Chris Woolley.
The Mixed Open for veteran ladies and gentlemen proved to be a success giving hope that it will be a fixture on the calendar with the Ilfracombe pairing of J and W Pugh leading a quartet of Holsworthy players their 47 points being by far the best of the day. Charlie Jenkins and Freda Olde in second spot with 43 points, with 42 point scores by Tony Tomassi and Glenys Mead, Reg Daniel and Pauline Bezzant and Colin Walmsley and Barbara Abrams. All the competitors from many clubs were full of praise for the excellent state of the course and the conviviality that abounded.
